What Is the Holland Code (RIASEC) and Why Career Tests Use It

If you've ever seen a career counselor, they likely used John Holland's RIASEC framework. Decades of peer-reviewed research show that matching your vocational interests to your work environment is the single best predictor of job satisfaction and longevity. The RIASEC model divides interests into six distinct categories:

The Six RIASEC Types

• Realistic (R): Hands-on, practical activities. Realists love working with objects, machines, tools, plants, or animals.
• Investigative (I): Analytical, intellectual, and scientific pursuits. Investigators love solving complex abstract puzzles and understanding how the world works.
• Artistic (A): Creative, unstructured, and expressive tasks. Artists value self-expression, aesthetics, and originality.
• Social (S): Helping, teaching, and curing others. Social types thrive in environments centered on human connection, counseling, and teamwork.
• Enterprising (E): Leading, persuading, and managing projects. Enterprising types are drawn to influence, status, and competitive execution.
• Conventional (C): Structured, organized, and methodical work. Conventional types love process discipline, data accuracy, and systemic efficiency.

Why Interest Alignment Matters More Than Skill

You can be incredibly skilled at a task, but if it doesn't align with your core RIASEC interests, you will eventually find it exhausting. True career happiness comes from working in an environment that naturally feeds your curiosity, where you are surrounded by like-minded peers who value the same activities.
